Spring Festival performances aren't just for professionals! Just as their winter vacation is about to start, students at an international school in Shanghai are putting on shows of their own, complete with dragon dances and folk songs.

About 20 Grade-6 students took part in the dragon dance, a traditional performance for the Chinese New Year. Although the dragon is not that large, the youngsters say it was not easy to control.

The dragon is heavy, and we have to hold bamboo sticks on the dragon. We've been practicing for two weeks already. It's very fun.

More than 600 students at Pudong's Wellington College took part in three performances, each lasting about two hours. The shows included many traditional Chinese arts, from songs to dances. And some of the students practiced Chinese songs for weeks. They said it was a good opportunity to learn more about the Spring Festival and Chinese culture.

The most challenging part is trying to memorize the words in Chinese.

It's celebrated to deal with the monster named 'Nian'. People wear red to scare him away. I usually go to my friend's house in Beijing, and we put up new banners and decorate the house, and go and buy fireworks.

Every student had a role in one of the shows, and parents said it was a good way to teach them about local culture.

"My daughter is still practicing her Chinese; her Chinese is not that good. You know in this way, it makes her interested in Chinese culture," said a parent.

Students also created some art works based on the Chinese New Year that were sold at auction. The auction collected 56,000 yuan, which will be donated to a charity that helps children in remote parts of the country.
