The southern city of Guangzhou is famous for its holiday flower fairs. The annual custom has become an institution in the city, with its origins going back some 500 years.

It's early morning, and a street in the Haizhu district has been transformed into a world of blossoms. Thousands of visitors come here with their families to become part of this customary event.

"I take my son to the flower fair every year, it’s a traditional event in Guangzhou, I want to join the festive atmosphere," a native said.

For many locals, buying a bunch of flowers at the fair has become an auspicious tradition ahead of the New Year -- the blossoms are believed to bring them happiness and good fortune.

At the flower fair, you can not only buy flowers but also other kinds of plants, for example the kumquat. It’s one of the favorites among the locals, as its name “JU” rhymes with the Chinese word “JI”, which means "Good Luck".

There are other booths selling handicrafts and toys, but the windmills are especially popular among the children and the elderly.

The flower fair lasts three days, and traditionally has its climax on New Year's Eve.
