Full coverage: 2016 Spring Festival

Across the vast land of China, people are ushering in the new year, and celebrating the coming spring, in well-preserved traditional ways.

The tranquil Shaxi Village, an ancient town in Yunnan Province is filled with a festive atmosphere.

People gather at a new year fair to enjoy delicacies and watch traditional opera -- a prelude to a month of new year celebrations.
And in Chongqing's Zhongshan ancient town, the long and narrow roads connecting the local neighborhood provide a perfect venue for a Spring Festival feast. People move their dining tables in front of their homes and share their food, including traditional glutinous rice cakes, hoping life in the new year can be as sweet as this much-loved dessert.

Besides all the tasty food, the festive mood in Ansai county, in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, is heard in the sound of the drums as people pray for an energetic and healthy life.

For the Hakka people in Fujian Province on China's southeast coast, families gather in their unique earth buildings, for a reunion dinner. The round or square shape buildings are a good reflection of the Chinese pursuit of unity and harmony.
