Shenzhen-based Huawei dwarfs peers in sales

02-26-2016 06:06 BJT

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is playing a starring role at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The Shenzhen-based company shipped 108 million smartphones last year, reflecting year-on-year growth of 44 percent. Huawei's upbeat performance comes at a time when industry leaders Samsung and Apple are facing a tough year ahead after the industry reported single-digit growth in 2015. Much of Huawei's success is due to a strategy that targets high volumes and low margins. However, analysts say that if the company is to succeed in the more established Western markets, that strategy will need to change.
