Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin said on Thursday, it is not appropriate for countries outside the region to push the so-called South China Sea "arbitration" at the East Asia Summit.

He said this goes against the trend of solving disputes through dialogue and consultations.

Liu said China and ASEAN countries have made progress in implementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.

But, he added, China is firmly opposed to countries outside the region meddling after seeing regional nations make progress.

ASEAN nations have realized that regional issues should be solved through dialogue and consultations among fellow regional countries, he said.
