Despite the setback, China's performance did have a silver-lining. China's young goalie He Siye earned high praise after her stellar performance, denying the hosts an even larger margin of victory. The young netminder earned China's best player award following the game.
As the qualifiers for the 2018 Winter Olympic games begin, He Siye is not just lacing up her skates. The youngster recently celebrated her 18th birthday, making her the youngest player on the Chinese team and, one of the most important as she'll be minding the crease.
"This is the first national game for me and of course I am nervous. So for myself all I can do is keep calm and just go into the game," said He Siye, China Goalie.
The opening game with the French hosts is undoubtedly one of the most important and difficult games for China's girls. The hosts are hightly touted as the most competitive rival in their group. In the first frame, France peppered He with 13 shots, all of which were denied. He finished the game with a save percentage of 91.7.
"All of my teammates played well, not just me. They helped me block some of the shots. Though we were not satisfied with the score, I believe we will do better in the next game," said He.
China takes these high hopes and Olympic dreams forward, as the girls lace up for puck drop in their next game against Latvia.
