Asia FMs attend Lancang-Mekong meeting

12-23-2016 19:37 BJT

Foreign Ministers of six neighboring countries in Asia's Mekong river region have gathered in the Cambodian city of Siem Reap to discuss regional cooperation.

The Mekong river, known as the Lancang in Chinese, runs through China, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. While the river represents a significant trade route for many countries in the region, it also flows through one of the most dangerous areas in the world - a notorious drug-producing region known as the Golden Triangle.

In 2014, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang proposed The Lancang-Mekong Cooperation framework to improve economic ties between countries and crack down on crime within the region. This is the second foreign ministers' meeting after the framework was approved earlier this year.
