Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart, Donald Trump have spoken by phone, to discuss the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. President Xi said China strongly opposes any actions that would violate UN resolutions. He called for all parties to exercise restraint. Both leaders promised to keep close communication on this and other major issues.

Tensions have risen since Trump ordered an aircraft carrier strike group to head to the peninsula. Two Japanese destroyers are holding joint military exercises with the carrier, and South Korea might join the drills. The DPRK has called the action military blackmail and said it would continue to develop nuclear weapons for self-defense against threats.

At a regular Foreign Ministry news briefing in Beijing, spokesperson Geng Shuang urged all sides to exercise restraint and avoid taking actions that could escalate tensions. He said China is preparing for a UN Security Council meeting on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
