Who's Chang’e-2

09-25-2010 16:06 BJT

The Chang’e-2 is the sister satellite of the Chang’e-1, and will be launched in a Long March 3A Carrier Rocket. The Chang’e-2 is a pioneer satellite for the “landing on the moon” mission and the second step of China’s lunar exploration project. Originally, the Chang’e-2 was the backup of the Chang’e-1. Then, since China needed to overcome a lot of key technological barriers of different areas in the second step of the project, it was re-built and became the pioneer satellite for the second step of the project.

The Chang’e-2 is the pioneer satellite for the second step of China’s lunar exploration project. Its mission is to accumulate experience for the second step of the project. Especially, it will play an important role in the key technical experiments for the Chang’e-3 satellite’s soft-landing mission and take high-definition videos in the Chang’e-3 satellite’s landing area. As the pioneer, the Chang’e-2 satellite’s mission consists of four parts—experiencing the course of flying to the moon as a pioneer, working in orbit 100 kilometers above the moon, entering orbit only 15 kilometers from the moon, and detecting the topography and landforms of the Chang’e-3 satellite’s landing area.

The designed life of the Chang’e-2 is six months, but as long as everything goes well, the energy saved will allow it to accompany the moon for a longer period of time.
