People buy old map of Beijing as souvenir

07-19-2010 15:40 BJT

After the news that the existing Chongwen, Xuanwu, Dongcheng and Xicheng districts will be combined into the new Dongcheng and the new Xicheng districts was released, many citizens went to buy the old edition of the Beijing map as a souvenir. Reporters learned that the new edition of the electronic map of Beijing is expected to be published at the end of the year.

Buy a map as a commemorative

After the news was released that the four districts will be combined, many people posted articles on the Internet saying that they will miss the old districts and suggested buying a map to hold on to the precious memories of the old districts. The reporter recently visited many newsstands in Beijing and found a marked raise in the sales of the Beijing map. Li, one of the newsstand owners, said, “In the past we could only sell three to five maps and most of the buyers were visitors here or tourists. But the maps have been selling well recently with an average of nearly ten being sold per day, and some of the buyers are residents of Beijing.”

A consumer told the reporter that he was brought up in Xuanwu District, and felt sentimentally attached to it, so he bought a map to hold on to the precious memories.

The new edition of the paper map is currently being designed

Currently the most popular Beijing map on the market is the Beijing traffic tourist map published by Sinomaps Press. The reporter opened this map and saw that Xuanwu and Chongwen districts are still clearly marked on it. The reporter then called Chen, director of Sinomaps Press’s general editing department to ask when the new edition of maps will be published. Chen said that they began preparations for the new edition of the Beijing maps immediately after they got the news that the four districts will be combined, but they have not received the official modification file. They are currently helping with work on the map of the new Xicheng district, but they cannot reveal the specific contents of the work.

According to Chen, there will not be many changes in the new edition of the map. The changes will mainly be adjustments of district boundaries and the colors used in the map as well as modifications to the locations of district government offices. After they get the official modification file, they need a month to edit and modify the map and another month to bind and print it, and then the new edition of the map will be available.

The new edition of the electronic map will be published at the end of this year

Compared to the paper map, the electronic map is more widely used. Since the four districts will be combined, how will the electronic map change? According to an official from an electronic map company, the new edition of the electronic map is expected to be published at the end of this year.

He added that the electronic map companies usually revise the map twice a year in the summer and winter. They have already revised the map this summer, so the revision for the combination of the four districts will have to wait until this winter. The revision of the electronic map is quite trivial and they first need to acquire data and compile the database, then send it to the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping for verification. When they pass the verification, they still need an electronic publication number to officially publish it. In accordance with the above process, the new edition will be published this December at the soonest and at the latest the beginning of next year. However, the web sites still need to change their search code after getting the data from the new edition of the electronic map. At the latest, it is expected they will update to the new electronic map on their websites by the middle of next year.
