With closed passages, stations at least 900 meters apart, flexible division of tram cars, and a slow speed for enjoying the scenery, the Xijiao Line is expected to be the first modern tram line in China. It is learned from the Beijing Urban Engineering Design and Research Institute that the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning has arranged for relevant experts to pre-assess the preliminary design of the Xijiao Line Project of Modern Trams. According to the preliminary designs, the line will provide public transportation for passengers who visit the Xiangshan scenic resort. At the same time, it will be built as a green environmentally-friendly and fast modern tram system with a beautiful appearance. It is estimated that the construction of the tram line will be completed and put into service in two to three years.

Mao Liliang, deputy head engineer of the Beijing Urban Engineering Design and Research Institute said the Xijiao Line will be built as the first modern tram line in China. Based on the investigations and opinions of all previous experts, the preliminary design of the project was drawn up and worked out by the operation principle of ‘trams go first at some level crossings’. The modern tram is a new type of urban railway system updated from traditional trams. Unlike traditional trams, the modern tram applies a closed special passage everywhere on the ground at Xijiao Line except the level crossings, which reflects the principle of bus priority. Different from the general track which is domed, the track where the modern tram goes levels the ground.
Some trams at the initial stage may be imported
Domestication will be realized later
At the initial stage, some trams used on the Xijiao Line may be imported to guarantee the requirement of the construction period. Afterwards, the goal of domestication will gradually be realized. It is said that such trams use lower floors that are only 280 to 320 millimeters above the track while the floor of general railway vehicles is 1,100 millimeters above the track. Its greatest advantage is that it is convenient for the elderly as well as women and children to get on or off the tram. The length of the body is about 30 meters, approximately equivalent to one and a half of today’s subway carriages. It can carry 250 to 300 passengers in total. This kind of tram is featured with large aisles, yet divided into five small sections.
The modern tram carries a beautiful and modern appearance. Adopting comprehensive technical upgrade and update based on traditional trams, it is a means of transportation firstly developed in Europe since the late 1980s. Compared with traditional trams, the modern trams not only have great changes in their appearance but also feature higher operational speeds, more comfortable spacing, as well as more convenient transfer methods. On the whole, the concepts of bus priority and green environment are fully embodied in the modern tram.
