"Hello, please make sure you sort your garbage." On July 22, Yuzhi, who is from Jiangxi, experienced a new service at the Temple of Heaven, the garbage sorting guide. As the 15th “Waste Reduction Thursday” was launched here, all the municipal parks have begun to recruit and organize waste separation and guidance staff.

On July 22, staff from eleven municipal parks began using badges saying “green tour guide.” In the future, hundreds of park staff members, tour guide interpreters and volunteers will wear the badges, helping visitors sort their rubbish according to “recyclable garbage” and “unrecyclable garbage.” Eleven municipal parks currently have already completed preparations for more than 2,000 trash sorting locations.
In the Temple of Heaven, the guides, who are wearing the badges, have also started to instruct visitors to bring their garbage out of the scenic area and then throw it away according to its classification. An official from the city park management centre says that this is an extension of the effort to remove garbage from the Fragrant Mountain and off the ship in Beihai, and it is mainly focused on improving visitors’ awareness of garbage processing.
However, most of the visitors are not accustomed to taking garbage with them out of the scenic area, they still get used to finding trash and they then have to throw the garbage away. A female visitor, who is leaving with a piece of paper towel in her hand after talking to the staff, still throws the paper into a green trash bin outside of the Hall of Prayer for the Good Harvest after walking for more than one hundred meters. Many visitors expressed disgust in regards to garbage when interviewed about the subject and didn’t realized that garbage is a kind of resource that is often misplaced, and they said they always try to throw their garbage away as soon as possible.
Besides guiding visitors in sorting their garbage, the park administrative office will also actively take a part in sorting the garbage and reducing waste. Niu Jianzhong, deputy director of the Temple of Heaven, said that the park’s annual production of grass clippings, tree branches and leaves can reach over 100 tons, it can effectively decrease its waste emissions and increase the fertility of the grassy areas by burying the grass clippings and chopping up the tree branches and leaves after shipping them out of the park. In the future, the park’s garbage will be transported to one of the garbage buildings, which are located on the western and eastern sides of the park, and then shipped to the garbage collection station based on its classification to be handled separately.
