At 7:43 a.m. on August 1, as China's first project to apply for World Heritage status in 2010, the historic Dengfeng monuments in "The Center of Heaven and Earth" were successfully added to the World Heritage list during the 34th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, and became the third site in Henan province to be included on the list after the Longmen Grottoes and the ruins of the Shang dynasty’s last capital "Yin" in modern-day Anyang.

The moment of success
At 8 a.m. on August 1, the reporter received a text message from the Zhengzhou Municipal Bureau of Cultural Heritage, which said, “At 8:43 p.m. on July 31 Brazil Time (7:43 a.m. on August 1 Beijing Time), the 34th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee decided to add the historic monuments of Dengfeng in 'The Center of Heaven and Earth' to the World Heritage list.”
"The scene at the meeting was very moving and inspiring," said Chen Ailan, director of the Henan Provincial Cultural Heritage Bureau, who was in Brazil to participate in the meeting. He said that the committee spent five minutes discussing the value of the historic Dengfeng monuments in “The Center of Heaven and Earth” and all committee members agreed that it has a high value. Then, the 21 member countries began discussing whether the historic monuments should be added to the World Heritage list. “In less than a minute, the committee members applauded and unanimously agreed.”
Chen added that after the successful application of the historic Dengfeng monuments, representatives of the other 20 member countries came to congratulate Chinese representatives and “we all hugged each other and cried.”
