Preview of Guangzhou Asian Games opening ceremony

11-12-2010 14:16 BJT Special Report:Guangzhou Asian Games |

On Nov. 6, Guangzhou held the second fireworks rehearsal for the Asian Games. Except for the torch lighting ceremony, all the other programs were rehearsed exactly according to the procedures of the opening ceremony. The viewers said that this opening ceremony rehearsal was almost as wonderful as the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and especially, the seagull patterns that were pieced together by aerialists along with a background of sails, was extremely distinctive and even more outstanding and exciting than the performances for the Beijing Olympics Games.

According to Chen Weiya, general director of the Guangzhou Asian Games, the most distinctive part of the opening ceremony is that the stage is not a stadium, but the Haixinsha Island in the Pearl River. The island looks like a giant boat, and has been named “Harmony.” The grandstand which can hold 18,000 people is the bridge of this “giant boat.” The four 80-meter high sails with eight screens are the core stage for performances during the opening ceremony.

According to the schedule, the opening ceremony of the Guangzhou Asian Games will start at 8 p.m. on Nov. 12. It will have five chapters including the overture “Dream.” Since Guangzhou is a coastal city and the Pearl River runs through it, the element of water will run through the entire opening ceremony. The primary programs include the “Water of the Mother Earth,” “Ark of the Ocean,” “Sails of White Clouds” and “Mystery of the Flower City.” The shows will last for about an hour. After the opening ceremony, the audience will witness the torch lighting ceremony to the background music, “Sunshine Again.” Then, athletes from 45 countries and regions will enter the arena. The entire ceremony will end with the background music, “Smile.”

How will the opening ceremony start?

A girl descending from the sky carrying a drop of sacred water

It is said that the rehearsal of the opening ceremony officially started at 8 p.m. on Nov. 6 with “a drop of water.” A Guangzhou girl descended from the sky sitting on a plantain leaf. She placed the drop of sacred water she carried into the ocean, and led the audience to formally “set sail.” The reporter saw that the center of the stage was covered by a layer of water about 10 centimeters deep, and when the performers entered the stage, beautiful water sprays appeared. To one side of the stage that was close to the audience, there was also a water channel of five meters wide and three meters deep, where many excellent programs such as the water ballet, high diving and motorboat acrobatics were performed.

Kapok flowers will unveil the Asian Games

The kapok flower is the city flower of Guangzhou, and when kapok petals are scattered on the stage, the four great chapters of the Asian Games’ opening ceremony will officially begin. Lin Lin, the director of the show, said that this design was determined when the opening ceremony was originally planned. “The kapok flower, which is not noticed much by people, will represent Guangzhou authentically and truthfully at that time.” Lin said that red kapok flower petals are quite elegant and can represent Lingnan culture, water and life. About 500 performers will participate in the show. Dressed like kapok petals, the performers will piece together an entire flower quickly, and scatter suddenly on stage.
