The Chinese zodiac cycles every 12 years, and each year is named after an animal. 2016 is the Year of the Monkey. It's particularly auspicious for many Chinese, because of the animal's place in Chinese mythology.
Of course there are some engaging traditions to make the night special. The New Year's Eve dinner has a theme of "reunion", where fish is traditionally served and also dumplings, especially in northern China, to signify prosperity.
