06-05-2012 03:41 BJT

Zambia looked anything but African champions, as they suffered a 2-nil loss against Sudan, in their 2014 World cup qualifier.

But Africa's top team, Cote d'Ivoire, led a list of 2010 finalists in a winning start to the qualifiers. Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou were on target for the Elephants, as they beat Tanzania 2-nil in one of 20 matches played over the weekend.

Algeria, Cameroon, Senegal and Tunisia also triumphed. Senegal and Tunisia came from behind to register wins with the Lions of Teranga beating Liberia 3-1.

Ghana and Nigeria both won, while South Africa was held to a one-all draw by Ethiopia. Another round of qualifiers will be held next weekend.
