Negotiations between Sudan and S. Sudan show progress

06-25-2012 01:54 BJT

Negotiations between the two Sudans in Addis Ababa have shown some progress. Sudan now says it will accept arbitration as the last option for a solution to its conflict with South Sudan. The two neighboring countries are meeting, after previous talks were adjourned in early June. Both sides failed to agree on a secure border zone.

The two sides reached an agreement to establish an ad hoc committee to find solutions for their ongoing border conflict. Regarding arbitration, Sudan had held a strong position saying that it was not an option. However, a spokesman of the Sudanese delegation told reporters on Saturday that in principle, Sudan accepts arbitration as a legitimate means of resolving disputes.

Sudan claims that arbitration is a last resort for the negotiation between the two nations. It is only when the negotiations fail that Sudan will consider arbitration. Sudan claims that the fact that South Sudan pushes for arbitration shows that the South has no good faith in their side.

Sudan and South Sudan broke off security talks early this month after failing to agree on a demilitarized zone along their disputed border to help prevent them slipping into outright warfare.

Khartoum's delegation accused South Sudan of making new land claims, most importantly to the Heglig oil field whose output is vital to Sudan's battered economy. The southern army had temporarily occupied Heglig during the recent fighting. Juba's delegation alleged that Khartoum was responsible for the failure of the talks.
