06-26-2012 03:05 BJT

As government troops in eastern D.R. Congo continue to suffer desertions by some soldiers joining the M23 rebels, the military has received a major boost from the United Peacekeeping Mission troops. The UN troops are now conducting joint patrols with the army. This effort that has helped stifle the rebel's movement and maintained control of the area.

It has been a quiet two weeks in Rutshuru district following a government directive to halt fighting and allow schools undertake their exams. But the M23 rebels have taken advantage of the lull and have been gaining significant ground previously lost to government troops. Among the rebels key targets is the military base located in this area.

Penina Karibe, Rutshuru, D.R. Congo, said, "This is Kabaya area from where I'm standing the M23 rebels are just 6 kilometers ahead and the military base just 7 kilometers behind me and this is what makes this area so crucial the reason the UN peacekeeping troops have concentrated here."

The UN troops have now joined forces with the national army, conducting joint patrols in the area.

FARDC Major ,said, "There is total security here. There is nothing that will interfere with exams in this area."

The military has suffered a major blow as a result of numerous desertions by soldiers. But despite that some remain defiant they will protect their country at whatever cost.

Penina Karibe, Rutshuru, D.R. Congo, said, "I'm ready to fight till the end i will fight for my country because the government has given me that right." For now, they await orders from Kinshasa what their next strategy is."
