ECOWAS roots for Mali unity gov’t.

07-09-2012 05:36 BJT

West African leaders have urged Mali's politicians to urgently form a national unity government. This should then request for deployment of an ECOWAS force to help in the fight against al Qaeda-linked militants occupying the north.

The West African leaders have been trying to help Malian political leaders to set aside their differences and tackle the security problems in the north, which many fear could become a haven for terrorism activities. Nigeria, Niger and Senegal have already pledged their willingness to provide the core of a 3,000 member force, whose mission would be to bolster Mali's fragmented army and stabilize political institutions.

It then would tackle the rebel-held north, if talks failed. Mali was plunged into chaos in March, after troops toppled the president, leaving a power vacuum that enabled separatist Tuareg rebels, backed by Islamists, to seize control of nearly two-thirds of the country's territory.
