F1 star Lewis Hamilton carries 2012 Olympic torch on relay

07-11-2012 02:21 BJT Special Report: 2012 London Olympic Games |

Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton carried the Olympic Torch on Day 52 of its journey across the United Kingdom and Ireland on Monday receiving a rousing reception in the town of Luton in Bedfordshire.

The 2008 Formula 1 World Champion was in St. George’s Square to play his part in the preparations for London 2012. Hundreds of locals braved unseasonably cold and wet weather to witness the start of Monday’s leg of the relay, which would make its way along a 196 kilometers route from Luton to Oxford, taking in 133 torchbearers.

Hamilton was initially asked to carry the torch through his home town of Stevenage, but plans were changed because the flame was there while he was competing in Sunday’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone, in which he finished eighth.
