Africans in China: Luc Bendza, Gabonese martial artist in China

07-21-2012 02:17 BJT

My name is Luc Bendza from Gabon and I’m in China for more than 30 years…my speciality is martial arts, Wushu and I am …also the coordinator for China Africa Association, Exchange Culture and Business Association.

When I was a child in Gabon we watched Bruce Lee movies a lot of movies about flying you know flying east flying west, all over you know.

I was impressed to see these kinds of movies…

And I said maybe, why not go to China and learn how to fly?

But my mom of course disagreed, I was very young, in China so far away from her…for her it was difficult to take the decision.

When he was 16 Bendza spent a year of intense martial arts training at Shaolin Temple.

Luc tries to get involved in different kinds of activities to
bridge African and Chinese cultures

I was in Shaolin Wushu festival and when I got the first place I was just sitting down resting and this old man came and said, are you interested to be in movies? And I said yeah why not, can try. That man who was at that time the manager of Bruce Lee.

Luc's friend is holding a container event at Chaoyang Park

Jackie Chan and I we meet often but to be there to be a part of his movies. It was a kind of dream. But more dream was when I act in the TV series called The Legend of Bruce Lee.

For me this is the place to achieve my dream. But to achieve your dream you need to make personal effort first and get involved to that culture to the Chinese society.

And involved he is.

Unlike many Africans, Bendza has found it easy to integrate into Chinese society.

He has helped organize many Sino-African events.

This time a huge cultural exhibition in the province of Guizhou is in the works.

Known as the Chinese person with black skin, Bendza married a Chinese woman. Initially they faced opposition to their union. But now their baby boy is viewed as a symbol of Sino-African friendship.

My friend has come to get some clothes!

His wife runs this tailor shop and counts African diplomats among her customers. He checks in when she is away. Bendza says China is part of the fabric of his life.

The way I see China is for me it’s my home.

My dream is to get more involved of lot of projects between China and Africa and to let both cultures know much more deeper and much better.

Look forward to your feedback.
