China develops infrastructure projects in Africa

07-25-2012 05:51 BJT

China is becoming a key partner in the development of infrastructure projects in Africa. In Kenya, Chinese contractors have just completed a modern super highway that is expected to enhance transportation, and also provide a link in business activities, across various towns.

A little more than a few years ago, bad roads were a common site in Kenya. The entry of Chinese contractors into the scene is however now changing the face of the country’s cities and towns.

To start off, the contractors first set up an elaborate operations centre; complete with a full time secretariat and a facility that is equipped with machineries.

The widely used method of arranging stones before placing tarmac on top is slowly being phased out.

The contractors have introduced the more advanced Troxler technology; flattening and re-flattening loam soil until the desired compaction is achieved.

Yu Fu, senior engineer of China road-bridge corp., said, "This is called a Nuclear Gauge; it’s Troxler. We use to test the field density. This road is class A, it’s very high standard. You see, this right now we are doing is called earth work. We are filling with the soils. You see this one is very high quality road."

Chinese companies are currently working on major highways, having successfully completed the impressive Thika Super Highway and the Eastern By-pass.

Yu Fu, senior engineer of China road-bridge corp., said, "Right now the African brothers and workers, they are working together with us. You see, he time they don’t know, we’ll teach them, we’ll train them."

These companies are providing thousands of jobs to the locals, empowering them and changing their lives.

The time I started this job I had nothing, but now at least I have something I can say. I have provided being provided by this company because they pay good money and I take to and I help my family.

Road users also expressed a lot of confidence and appreciation in the works of the Chinese, some even calling for more projects to be given to them.

"It’s very good. Actually am very happy, because there’s no much traffic."

Road infrastructure development plays a big role in African economies. The period of relatively rapid growth for the continent has probably been aided by a marked improvement of transportation systems.
