Fighting escalates in D. R. Congo

07-27-2012 02:39 BJT

A picture eerily familiar to residents in Eastern Congo as the Congolese army uses all available means at their disposal to reinforce its troops at the battle front around the towns of Rutushuru and Kiwanja. The last three days has seen heavy fighting between government office backed by UN helicopter gunships in bid to stop the rebels advancing to Goma. While admitting heavy fighting was still ongoing army spokesman Olivier Amuli says the army has the upper hand. The enemy has been pushed back, they suffered heavy losses but there is still fighting near Rutushuru and Kiwanja, but our forces are doing well as they take into account the security of civilians.

Thousands of civilians mostly women and children have already fled the fighting, making their way to the provincial capital of Goma. However they tell a different story from the front from that of the army

The CNDP came at 8a.m to attack government positions, we all lay down as they government did not react as the rebels were too many. They fired a lot of bullets and stole all the military's rations.

The latest fighting has led to an escalation of tensions between Congo and its neighbor Rwanda. Rwanda denies it is offering the rebels any form of support and has agreed in principal to a joint force to rot out the menace, in the mean time a quarter of a million people have been forced from their homes.
