Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. Upon observing Abraham's act of devotion, God instead provided him with a ram to sacrifice. Our correspondent takes a look at this year's Eid preparations in Pakistan.

As Eid-al-Adha arrives, makeshift markets are being set up to prepare for the day of sacrifice.

Eid al-Adha is celebrated annually on the 10th day of the 12th and the last Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Eid al-Adha celebrations start after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, by Muslims worldwide.

The festival brings a message of peace, sacrifice, and devotion in the name of God.

Aftab, Buyer, said, "On this day, we as Muslims, and as humans, should spread peace and love in the world. Pakistan is going through a lot. We have seen terrorism and then floods. But we are still one nation. On Eid day, I want all Pakistanis to pray for the country."

It is in the Islamic tradition to sacrifice animals to please Allah and get his blessings.

Every year, thousands of people migrate from villages to bring sacrificial animals to the cities.

This bull is named "Sheraa" which literally means "Lion King." Aslam, the owner of Sheraa has proudly decorated his animal. He hopes to get a good deal.

Aslam, Merchant, said, "I have been raising Sheraa for the last three years. I have fed him almonds and milk. He weighs more than two tons. He is the pride of my village, and I am happy to sell him, so he can be sacrificed for Allah."

Sheraa has come from Bahawal Pur, about three kilometers from Islamabad.

According to Aslam, he is worth 600,000 rupees, which is about seven thousand dollars.

Stalls of various decorations have also been set up, so the buyers can decorate their animals.

Jameel, Merchant, said, "Children usually like buying these decorations. For them it is a competition that their animal should be more decorated than the others. I have brought these decorations from Peshawar."

The charitable practices of Muslims are demonstrated during Eid al-Adha by efforts to see that no impoverished person is left without a share in the sacrificial meal during these days.

Many believe that, even though Eid al-Adha comes once a year, the spirit of sacrifice and peace should remain all year round.

"In these times of uncertainty and insecurity, when the country is going through an air of natural catastrophes and terrorism, the people of Pakistan have found an opportunity in this day of Eid to unite and move forward towards a brighter and prosperous future. Danial Khan, CCTV, Islamabad."
