Background: Asia muslims

Islam began in Asia in the 7th Century, during the life of its Prophet Mohammed. The greatest number of adherents to the faith have lived on the continent since the dawn of Islamic history. Asia remains home to the planet's largest Muslim population.

More than 60 percent of the world's Muslims live in Asia. Indonesia, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh have the largest Muslim populations on the globe.

In South Asia, 30 percent of its population, or 490 million are Muslims. In Southeast Asia, 40 percent of the population, or 236 million people, are Muslims. In Western Asia, 92 percent of the population, or 200 million people, are Muslims.

Every country in the region has Muslims accounting for more than 70 percent of its total population except Israel, which only has a Muslim population of 17 percent.

In Central Asia, 90 percent of the population, or 165 million people, are Muslims. Iran, Afghanistan, Uzebekistan, and Kazakhstan have the region's largest Muslim populations.
