The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has warned it is on the "brink of war" with South Korea in the wake of Tuesday's shelling. Pyongyang played down its role in the skirmish that killed four South Koreans, saying it was an act of self-defense. Meanwhile, the US has announced it will participate in a joint drill with South Korea's military next week.

The DPRK's Red Cross Society issued a statement that accused South Korea of "derailing the process for improving inter-Korean relations".

The US aircraft carrier George Washington left Japan on Tuesday to join exercises with the South Korean naval force. The four-day drill begins on Sunday in the waters west of the Korean peninsula.

The timing of the exercise has raised regional tensions, however the US Navy insisted in a press release that the exercise was planned before the DPRK's artillery attack on Tuesday。

The press release added that the deployment demonstrated "the strength of the South Korean-US alliance" and the US Navy's "commitment to regional stability through deterrence".

The DPRK's official Korean Central News Agency responded by accusing the US of driving the peninsula to the "brink of war" with "reckless military provocation".
