Background: HIV/AIDS infection rate stabilizes in Asia

December the first was the 23rd World AIDS Day. This year's theme is Universal Access and Rights. According to the UNAIDS report on the global aids epidemic in 2010, nearly 5 million people in Asia are living with HIV.

More than 4 million of those, reside in South and South-East Asia. In east Asia the figure stands at 770-thousand. India's HIV population is 2.4 million. Thailand has more than half a million, and Indonesia... an estimated 310-thousand. There are 740 thousand people living with HIV in China. Japan and South Korea each have about 9-thousand. Of the 5 million, about 360-thousand people are newly infected,... 90-thousand less, than 2001 numbers. The figures, particularly, the rate of new infections, suggest the HIV epidemic in Asia has stabilized.
