An anchored boat crowded with sleeping tourists in Vietnam's Ha Long Bay sank early Thursday, killing a dozen people.

The government says the victims are from the US, Britain, Australia, Japan, Russia, France, Sweden and Switzerland. A Vietnamese tour guide is also among those killed.

Nine foreigners and six locals survived by jumping into the water, where they were rescued by other tour boats. A wooden plank on the ship reportedly ripped away and water rushed in, quickly pulling the vessel under water.

Stefano Cassani, Italy Survivor of Ha Long Bay Sinking, said, "I went to the toilet at 4:20 (am), and the boat was bending like 15, 20 degrees on the right side. After that, I went back to bed and the boat was still bending. After half an hour, 20 minutes, we started to hear tables and glass falling from the top of the restaurant. After that, my friend went out. He called me, 'Come on! Come on! Something's wrong here. The boat is going down.' We jumped from the boat, we started swimming to the next boat. And in that time, one boat rescued us."
