Rescue teams say they have given up hope of finding survivors in New Zealand's quake-hit city of Christchurch. Efforts will now be concentrated on recovering the remaining victims.

The city's mayor, Bob Parker made the announcement, more than a week after the quake struck. Rescuers pulled out 70 people alive from the rubble in the first 26 hours of the disaster, but no one had been found alive since then.

Victims of the disaster are reported to come from more than 20 different countries, including foreign students from Japan and China.

Meanwhile, scientists have warned that the quake may increase the possibility of a stronger tremor striking the New Zealand capital Wellington.
