Staff evacuated amid radiation fears

06-01-2011 14:36 BJT Special Report:9.0 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Japan |

Japan's health minister has ordered some employees at the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant to stop working, amid concerns that two workers may have exceeded a radiation exposure limit.

The plant's owner, TEPCO, says the two control room operators are being tested further and don't have immediate health problems.

If confirmed, they would be the first men to reach the government-set limit.

In a separate development, two of the biggest stars of New York's Metropolitan Opera have pulled out of a tour of Japan, because they are afraid of radioactive contamination.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government has received reports of an explosion from the south side of the plant's No. 4 reactor.

TEPCO later confirmed that the noise was caused by a damaged gas cylinder.TEPCO said there was no change in radiation levels at the plant's monitoring posts and no one was injured.
