Hundreds of opera fans have been getting their musical fix in Israel. Set in a unique desert location, the Israeli Opera Festival is now in its second year with many more set to come.

Aida, by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, is being staged on the shores of the Dead Sea with the historical mountain of Massada as a backdrop. Verdi's Nabucco was performed here last year.

The 12-day festival includes another Verdi opera called Jerusalem. The event has cost close to 9 million US dollars.

If funding can be found, the organizers hope to bring the operatic spectacle to other sites in Israel.

Hanna Munitz, general director of Israel's Opera, said, "Well, first of all, we started this festival last year and immediately it became a great success, so we decided to continue it and actually make a tradition of it. So a dream actually became a tradition very quickly like things happen in Israel."

Daniel Oren, opera expert, said, "A special emotion here. It's really you cannot compare the emotion we have here, everybody but especially the Israelis, the Jewish people here in Massada to listen to an opera in front of the Massada mountain knowing the story, knowing everybody - it's very very touching."

Ruben Shemer, Tel Aviv resident, said, "It's a different experience. This is not an opera in la Scala or in New York's Met. This is a grand, I would say, performance. It's a grand thing to do."
