Vietnam is holding a live-fire naval drill in the South China Sea. The move comes after China demanded Vietnam stop violating China's sovereignty in the area.

The Vietnamese government is calling Monday's exercise a "routine annual training activity."

The drill includes two sessions and lasts a total of nine hours, around Hon Ong Island, located about 40 kilometers off the country's central coast. The site is around 250 kilometers from China's Xisha Islands, and 1,000 kilometers away from the Nansha Islands.

The war game comes four days after Chinese fishing boats were chased by Vietnamese ships near Nansha. Vietnam says the Chinese vessel damaged a cable from its seismic survey craft.

China has dismissed the accusation, and warned Vietnam to stop all oil exploration in the South China Sea.
