The 36-hour non-stop strike organized by Bangladesh's main opposition party entered its second day on Monday, paralyzing transport across the capital, Dhaka.

At least 113 people, including some leaders of the main opposition, the Bangladesh National Party, have been detained since Sunday.

Most shops and businesses across the capital remain closed. The general strike is being organized by the BNP and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami.

The opposition is demanding the continuation of the caretaker government system and protesting recommendations made by the parliamentary special committee on constitutional amendment that the system be scrapped.

The main objective of the caretaker government is to create an environment in which an election can be held in a free and fair manner without any political influence of the outgoing government.
