Saudi Arabia has marked the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan by lighting up what it says is the world's largest clock tower, in the city of Mecca. Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, will start the Muslim month of fasting on Monday, along with most other Gulf states.

The giant clock began ticking at the start of Ramadan last year, amid hopes by Saudi Arabia it will become the Muslim world's official timekeeper. The Mecca Clock has 4 faces measuring 43 meters in diameter. It sits 400 meters up what will be the world's second-tallest skyscraper and largest hotel, overlooking the city's Holy Grand Mosque, which Muslims around the world turn to five times a day for prayer.
