Nepal's major political parties have staked competing claims on the prime minister's post, plunging the Himalayan nation back into political uncertainty that have left it without a constitution or a stable government.

Prime minister, Jhalnath Khanal, resigned after failing to make progress toward adopting a constitution during his six months in office.

On Monday, Nepal's three major parties said they plan to hold talks on naming a new prime minister, but each insisted, that their party would lead any new coalition government. Khanal had faced demands from the opposition Nepali Congress party to step down.

The party had accused him of failing to live up to his promise to move the peace process forward. He also faced turmoil from within his own party, the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist, since the day he took office. They were not happy with the distribution of ministerial portfolios.
