Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says the country welcomes Russia's "step-by-step" approach proposal to resolve its nuclear standoff.

The President made the remarks in a meeting with visiting Russian Security Council Secretary, Nikolai Patrushev, who is in Tehran for talks that include Iran's nuclear issue.

Patrushev says Russia is also ready to further enhance cooperation with Iran in areas of economy, transportation, communication and nuclear programs.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, said Russia's proposal on Iran's nuclear issue could help resume talks on peaceful nuclear cooperation with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany.
