Video games and hip-hop music are unlikely tools for doctors hoping to improve the health of senior citizens. But Australian researchers are showing how virtual fun can prevent accidents and keep the elderly healthy.

Ready? Go! This game is not just for fun, but also for staying healthy.

Australian doctors are finding out how technology can be used to help their older patients stay fit. By using the latest gaming technology, health workers can encourage them to exercise more to improve their mobility.

Susan Gaden suffered a fractured bone. She says she would have benefited from the technology.

Susan Gaden said, "I had a hip replacement 12 months ago and that sort of technology would have been very useful in my rehabilitation."

The technology has been designed for older patients to use safely and easily. Dr Stuart Smith from Neuroscience Research Australia says using technology makes a big difference to how people feel about exercise.

Dr. Stuart Smith said, "If you put a game controller in people's hands or get them to stand in front of a video game system that can track their movement, then they'll keep doing their exercises."

Dr Stuart Smith has found games that focus on dance steps can help the elderly with their balance and co-ordination.

Other applications for the technology are on the way. Researchers say specially tailored games could help manage weight problems and cerebral palsy.
