DPRK to hold first defense drill with Russia

09-14-2011 15:07 BJT

The DPRK and Russia are set to hold their first joint defense drill as early as this year in an bid to balance the United States, South Korea and Japan's influence on the Korean peninsula.

Members of the two neighbors' navies and air forces will take part in a joint rescue exercise at sea, following an agreement reached last month between the two countries. The United States and South Korea held large-scale joint military exercises last year.

Pyongyang has been making conciliatory moves in recent months since it left the Six-party talks in 2009.

The six-party talks are aimed at creating a nuclear-free Korean peninsula.
