Anti-government protesters have taken to the streets of the capital, Sanaa, demanding a trial for President Ali Abdullah Saleh and the release of imprisoned demonstrators.

They accuse Saleh of fostering civil war. In some parts of the capital, soldiers who have defected from government ranks have shown their support for the protesters. But at other locations in Sanaa protesters faced pro-government forces.

Months of anti-government protests have divided impoverished Yemen, pushing it to the verge of civil war and a humanitarian crisis. Saleh has dug his heels, in surviving an assassination attempt and three times agreeing to sign a Gulf-brokered power transition plan only to back out at the last minute. The UN Security Council issued a resolution on October 21 deploring the fighting and calling on Saleh to leave office.
