As Japan gears up to welcome the year of the dragon, it leaves behind a year that many feel quickly grew bit long in the tooth.

With 2012 only a few days away, the Japanese are bidding farewell to the year of the rabbit and preparing to welcome the year of the dragon.

Although it follows the Chinese Zodiac, Japan celebrates its new year according to the western calendar on January 1st. This year the traditional lunar New Year falls on January 23.

At a "handover" ceremony on Tuesday in Osaka the curator of the Tennoji Zoo, carried a nine-month-old white rabbit representing the year 2011 while the head of Tsutenkaku tower held a bowl of sea horses representing the year of the dragon.

60-year-old Kenjiro Nagase, curator of The Tennoji Zoo, said, "With the Great Eastern Japan (earthquake and tsunami) disaster, the nuclear accident, the European currency, crisis this year’s been pretty harey. We want to see this year flee as fast as a fleeing rabbit."

61-year-old Masaaki Nishikami, head of The Tsutenkaku Tower, said, "I believe that the economy and the tsunami recovery will soar like a rising dragon next year".

The annual event was held in the Tsutenkaku, a tower and a tourist attraction in the western Japanese city of Osaka.
