A national flag raising and saluting ceremony has been held in the new capital of Nay Pyi Taw to mark Myanmar's Independence Day.

Vice President Sai Mauk Kham read an Independence Day message from President U Thein Sein at the ceremony, stressing the importance of national unity.

Thein Sein said in his message that only if the nation is in peace with national unity, can democracy be practised in earnest. He added that people's well being will improve only through democratic practices and national development. He also called for people to take part in strengthening the economy.

Myanmar's new government also announced an amnesty to more prisoners Monday, on the eve of the 64th anniversary of Independence. More than 9 thousand of the country's prisoners will be released from Wednesday.

Myanmar gained independence from British rule on January the 4th, 1948.
