Music festival lands in east Australia

01-05-2012 14:03 BJT

It's a long way from Woodstock but there are echoes of that classic festival, as thousands attend Australia's annual Woodford Folk Festival.

Around 95,000 people descended on Australia's eastern Gold Coast for six days of music and celebration. In recent years, crowds have been hit by wet weather and flooding. But, there wasn't an umbrella in sight this year. The festival director says the blessing of good weather made for record crowds.

Bill Hauritz, festival director, said, "In December last year, we had almost a meter of rain and almost a foot of that fell during the festival."

More than 2000 performances spreading across 26 sites offered a range of blues, folk, hip-hop and Tibetan chanting. Along with the music, there were around a hundred stalls selling clothing, jewellery, gifts and things like didgeridoo-making workshops. Visitors ate in the 46 cafes and restaurants and including Giancarlo Molinaro's 'Spaghetti Junction'.

A young girl thrilled passers-by with Eastern-European tunes.

A festival goer said, "It's fabulous, it's great. So much fun."

One festival-goer said she never misses a year.

A festival goer said, "Everywhere you look there's something amazing happening you know, really creative."

"It's kind of like an escape into you know a utopian world," said a visitor.

But even for committed music-lover, tickets aren't cheap. A six-day camping pass is more than 500 US dollars. Festivities wrapped up New Year's night with the annual bonfire and lantern ceremony.
