Around Asia, there are a few countries that organize events to select a word, or character, of the year. Malaysia has now joined the club, and for 2011 the country has selected the Chinese character "zhuan", a word that generally means "change". Let's head there to find out more.

Last Friday in Malaysia, the Chinese character for "change" was selected as the character of 2011. Coming in a respectable second and third were the characters "tan", which means corrupt, and "zheng", which means compete. These Chinese characters express Malaysians', especially Chinese Malaysians' deep feelings about international and domestic events last year.

Pheng Yin Huah, chairman of Chinese Council in Malaysia, said, "Chinese characters such as "tan," "mi," "ren" and "zheng" have their certain meanings. These characters also express the willingness of the country and people who hope that something bad can be changed and corrected."

In recent years, some Asian countries including China, Japan and Singapore started to choose their annual word. In December, the Chinese character "kong," meaning control, was selected as the 2011 character in China. And Japan chose "kizuna", the character for bond, to best represent the year of 2011.
