The Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has called malnutrition among children a matter of national shame.

Singh told lawmakers, social activists, journalists, artistes and policy makers, that the rate of malnutrition is alarmingly high, despite impressive economic growth.

He acknowledged India has not succeeded in reducing this rate fast enough. Singh also stressed children's health should be the main cause of concern, calling it the base for the health of the economy and society.

"Despite impressive growth in our GDP, the level of under-nutrition in the country is
unacceptably high" said the Indian prime minister

According to UNICEF data, one in every three malnourished children in the world lives in India.

The government plans to double its food subsidies to 2 percent of GDP.
