Freezing weather continues in Japan and S. Korea

Freezing temperatures continue in Japan. Heavy snowfall blanketed an extensive area of the northern coastside on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the country's meteorological agency issued warning of avalanches and possible heavy snowfall in Northern Japan through Friday.

The weather agency reports that a total of 4 meters of snow has accumulated in the village of Okura in Yamagata Prefecture, making it the worst stricken area.

Snow accumulation has reached about 3 meters in Niigata Prefecture, an area that was shaken by a magnitude 5 earthquake on Wednesday night. Niigata has been on alert for possible avalanches.

In neighbouring South Korea, plummeting temperatures have raised farm produce costs.

The National weather agency said in central areas, the highest daytime temperature since Wednesday has fallen to minus 20 degrees Celsius.

In Seoul, the freeze blocked customers. The prices of peppers and oranges have risen by 82 percent from last month.

The weather agency warns that the severe cold and snow will continue to Saturday.
