An Egyptian-brokered truce between Israel and the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip has begun to take hold. This comes after four days of violence in which 25 Palestinians were killed and 200 rockets were fired at Israel. Abu Ahmad, a spokesman for the Islamic Jihad group, expressed his stance and understanding on the truce.

Abu Ahmad, Islamic Jihad spokesman, said, "Our position is clear and our demands are specific, Israel should stop the aggression, promise not to return to the assassination policies, and the truce should be mutual. We are able to get what we asked for with the help of Egypt. The Zionists promised to stop their assassination policies, and to commit to the truce, and we are committed to the truce as long as the occupation is committed to it. We will respond if the truce is breached."

The number of Palestinian rocket attacks has dropped steeply after the ceasefire went into effect overnight. The Israeli military said three rockets had hit, causing no casualties, and that there had been no Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip.

The truce agreement followed appeals from world powers - the United States, France, the United Nations, the European Union and the Arab League - for both sides to exercise restraint.

The worst violence along the restive frontier in months began on Friday, after Israel killed a senior Palestinian officer it accused of plotting to attack Israel from Egyptian territory.
