Chinese president urges trust, stability, cooperation at SCO summit

President Hu Jintao has presided over a small-group meeting of the 12th Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Beijing.

Uzbek President Karimov, Kyrgyz President Atambayev, Russian President Putin, Kazakh President Nazarbayev and Tajik President Rahmon attended the meeting.

Hu Jintao says the SCO has made great achievements in the fields of anti-terrorism, economy and culture. He adds that challenges and opportunities still lie ahead as the organization defines its direction and goals for the next decade.

Among those goals, President Hu says promoting harmony, mutual trust and taking care of core interests, will be priority, as will the maintenance of security.

Member states will strengthen their efforts in fighting the "Three Evil Forces." That's terrorism, regional separatism and religious extremism. Transnational crimes and drug smuggling are also an important concern.

Coordination in the fields of trade, energy, food and transportaion will be strengthened to generate common prosperity in the region. And a new security concept based on equality and trust will be mapped out, raising the international significance of the organization.
