US Defence Secretary, Leon Panetta, has met with his Indian counterpart Arackaparambil Kurien Antony in New Delhi.

They're meeting to discuss the United States new military strategy in the Asia Pacific. Panetta has told India that the US and India must work to overcome deep differences with Pakistan if they are to bolster peace and security in South Asia.

Panetta and Antony also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Panetta has urged India to provide additional support to Afghanistan, in particular by increasing trade and aid to the Afghan security forces.

Panetta says he welcomes the steps taken by India and Pakistan to normalize their trade relations. Earlier on Tuesday, Panetta met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed deepening defence ties between the two nations.

Panetta's two-day visit to New Delhi is part of an Asian tour in the wake of Washington's strategic shift to Asia.
