A suicide car bomb has injured 14 people and damaged a popular Shiite Muslim shrine in a Damascus suburb.

The bomber detonated his explosives-packed van when he reached a parking lot despite efforts by guards to stop him. The Shiite shrine, about 50 meters away from the blast site, was damaged. A security complex nearby was also affected. UN observers have arrived at the site to examine the situation. Another team of UN observers arrived in the town of Haffa Thursday.

The town has witnessed intense clashes between government forces and rebel fighters in recent days. UN monitors tried to enter Haffa Tuesday but were forced to turn back. Syrian State TV says government forces have now "purged" Haffa of "armed terrorist groups".
