Indonesian women participates martial arts classes for self defense

06-25-2012 22:49 BJT

An increase in attacks on women in Jakarta is prompting a rise in demand for martial arts classes. Participants hope that by learning to defend themselves, they’ll feel more confident travelling alone on the city’s streets.

27 year old Vita Amanda Putri is a victim of the current rise in attacks on Jakarta’s public transport system.

She works at a foreign embassy and until two years ago, she felt safe travelling alone.

But then she suffered two separate sexual assaults - one on a bus, and one on the subway.

She decided to join a women’s self-defense class last February.

She said, " Now I’m more alert. I’m aware that I can be attacked anywhere and from any direction -- especially when I’m walking at night. "

Many women have been doing the same.

It’s a new phenomenon in this capital city of over 10 million residents, in a country with the world’s largest Muslim population.

Woman’s activist, Mariana Amiruddin, says attacks on women are increasing -- driving them to learn self defense.

Mariana also points to a lack of strong legal action against men who sexually assault women.

Woman’s activist Mariana Amiruddin said, " Legal uncertainties here have given way to increasing criminal acts. In such cases, women are often the most heavily affected. "

Overcrowded cities and the high cost of living have also made women more vulnerable to violence than ever before.

These women hope that by taking the matter into their own hands, they may be able to ensure they stay safe at night.
